Virtual Tabletop Token Test

Description

As part of my latest Kickstarter project, I'm creating tokens for use with virtual gaming tabletops such as Roll20 [link]

There are two basic styles of tokens that people use on virtual tabletops, which I'll call '2d miniatures' and 'portrait tokens'. 2d miniatures are simply pieces of art which look like miniatures viewed from above. Portraits tokens are tiles that (usually) show the character or creature's face.

Since I'm making my tokens from the drawings that I'm doing in my Kickstarter project, portrait tokens are the way to go. This image is a test, where I've taken a preliminary sketch from my project, added color, and dropped it into a frame to see how it'll look on the virtual tabletop.

The shape of the frame is a bit of an experiment itself. Most portrait tokens I've seen are round, with a wide border. I think making them round loses too much image space, and adding the wide border loses even more. Also, circular tokens do not convey the character's facing. So I've kept my portrait token frame more of less square, with very little border to maximize the image space, and I've angled the top of the token to create a directional facing 'pointer'.

300 x 300 pixels seems to be the standard dimensions for the token of a human-sized character. This creature, the 'Hra', stands about 10' tall - so I've made its token 600 x 600 pixels.

Those of you who play on virtual tabletops are welcome to copy this image and try it out for yourselves. I'd love to hear your feedback on my portrait token design!

I might also suggest trying to make them either with optional background colors, or via that pdf format that allows layers. Then the user could swap out a blue, red, green background to allow several "groups' of the same unit. Groups could relate to factions, or different stat lines for underlings and leaders.. that kind of thing.. not sure what to say about shape..
